Title: Rogues: Should I Change to Subtlety?
Post by: ZagZ on September 24, 2008, 01:40:20 PM
Hi,

I have had a combat rogue since I first started playing wow. I have gone down the combat talent tree with a few points in assasination making me a hybrid of sorts with a sword specialization.

This has worked great for a long time. The other day though I saw another rogue killing off some ogres and he seemed to do it with greater ease and speed than me. I figured him for a subtley rogue and it got me thinking.

Now I have never played PVP and rarely do instances so this aside would I find much use in changing my talent tree? Bearing in mind that there won't be an end game for me for a while as LK is coming out soon and Im only 65 at the min.

I have never got to grips with this stun locking business, do I need various subtley talents to do this?

Thanks

Hey buddy,

I think your priority should be levelling seeing as the expansion is due out shortly, but at the moment I would rule out making any spec changes seeing as with the next content patch you will get a free respec as the level 80 talent trees are released.

After that... well who knows how the new talents will fall and what they'll be useful for.

Towards the end of my run to 70, I went for an assassination / subtlety spec and it worked incredibly well.  If you want to get stuck in before the next patch, I'll gladly link you a build.

My rogue is combat and always has been.  You do not need subtlety to use stun lock though.  If you start off with Cheapshot you can usually knock a few chunks out of them before they come around from that and by then you should have a few points for a Kidney Shot so you can finish them off.

Being swords means you worry less than my daggers about positioning so no need to run around behind to get in a Backstab.

Having said all that my rogue is pretty much specced to do damage in a group - my understanding is that Subtlety is a lot of fun and allows a large amout of burst damage whereas Combat is more consistent but sustainable.

To be honest, Stunlock doesn't really exist any more.  The old spec used to have a mix of all three trees and included several key talents including mace spec from the combat tree and those talents that allow extra generation of combo points with cheapshot / crits.  I think that improved kidney shot was also used to make the damage really count.

You know if you're as good as set for Stunlocking if the following is true:
Cheapshot / Special / Special = 5 combo points ready for the Kidney Shot

(by Special I either mean Sinister or Hemo)

My opinion would be as follows:

Levelling - Ass/Sub Hemo or Combat Swords
Raiding - Combat Swords
PvP in any form - Sub/Ass

But as I said previously, it's all about to get mixed up so who knows!

Thanks guys, sounds like I may just be better off sticking with my combat/swords spec. Just wondered what it was like switching to another popular tree path.

I am levelling again in an attempt to get to 70, tiz a grindfest tho and I don't have a lot of time to dedicate. Dam girlfriends require attention lol.

Thanks again.
