Hi,

im new to the forum and to world of warcraft in general.  Am on my first character and it is a Dranei Shaman.  Just fancied the idea of one. . . . . having read some of the articles on here it seems as though most people think its one of the worst and most difficult classes.  However i am determined to succeed with it.  Im currently lvl 21.

I would like some advice on the following if thats ok:

1 - Builds, is there a particularly good talent build i could use, im not sure on where to put my points.

2 - Getting teamed up on.  Im fine at taking down 1 adverssary, even a couple of levels above me but sometimes i struggle if i get mobbed up on.  Against 1 chracter i can fire a couple of lightning bolts and then melee em to death, aided by a totem or 2 if i have to.  But i can struggle against 2 or more.  Is there any good techniques to help me?

3 - Any tips in general that will help, i hear tey struggle in PvP. . . how i can i overcome this early on.  I think they will be good in groups cos the totems can help the whole team and i can also dish out a bit of damage but soloing seems to be hard. . . . . .

Thanks in advance. . . . .

Hey buddy and welcome to the site!

I've personally levelled a Dranny Shammy to 70 so might be able to help a bit Smiley

They are in my opinion one of the most fun, versatile and rewarding classes to level with.  But don't listen to my thoughts, or those of the nay sayers, decide for yourself.

Lets have a look at your questions....

1 - Builds, is there a particularly good talent build i could use, im not sure on where to put my points.

Well personally I would go for Enhancement to level.  Try something like this as you go, completing the Enhancement tree first:

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=hZxVbdVhsAuqoxbgz

The important thing here is get these key talents as quickly as possible:

- Improved Ghost Wolf
- Dual Wield
- Stormstrike
- Improved Dual Wield
- Shamanistic Rage

When choosing weapons for Dual Wield, try to get those that are as slow and have the highest max damange (not dps) possible.

Always put Windfury on both weapons and use Stormstrike on cooldown and Earth shock whenever Shamanistic Focus procs.

The tactics here can vary hugely depending on what you're fighting.  Dropping a Stone Claw totem can keep one mob busy for a while whilst you nuke his friend.  Instant Ghost Wolf is incredible for an escape if it all goes wrong.  Just drop a Stone Claw or Earth Bind Totem, Ghost Wolf and run.

3 - Any tips in general that will help, i hear tey struggle in PvP. . . how i can i overcome this early on.  I think they will be good in groups cos the totems can help the whole team and i can also dish out a bit of damage but soloing seems to be hard. . . . . .

I've personally never had a massive problem in PvP although I suspect it will be a bit of a struggle whilst using a a levelling build.  Enhancement is hard work and requires good movement, Resto makes you almost unkillable if played correctly and Elemental has devastating burst damage on an unsuspecting enemy.

Totems are a god send in both solo, PvP and Raiding.

It's a good time to be rolling a Shaman, they are getting much love in Lich King.

Hope some of this is useful mate.

yeah thanks m8 that does help alot. . . . . . . nice wearm welcome aswell!!!

1 - with regards to build, when i started i had a quick look for one and found one that said to do the 10 point on elemental first i. e.  concussion and convvection cos this was best for levelling, hence i did that. . . . . . do you think i should unlearn them and go for the enhancement build.  TBH i wanted to go enhancement to keep him alive but decided against it.

2 - yeah i dont use the stoneclaw totem enough. . . . thought it was useless to start with but i can see now how it can help me out.  I alwys use the protective one instead.  But will try using it more.

3 - Good tips.

Goes without saying that i am very early atsages of the game, i just wanna know what techniques to apply so that i can practice and imrpove while levelling so that when i get there i will be accustomed to it.

My main question again:
My image of what i want to do and how i want to play this class is that of a warrior shaman. . . . one who can assist his allies by placing totems and firing off a few spells before wading in and laying waste to his foes in melee. . . . . . is this achievable. . . . . . should i go for enhancement build as its obvious i want him to stay alive. . . . . . and with leather/mail only thats gonna require some enhancement skills.

Can i ask what build you use and how you use it. . . . .

I plan to use these forums regularly as its the only one i can see at work (through the firewall). .

Thanks again. . . .

I'd always recommend Enhancement for levelling.  Once you get higher you don't need to rest much and mainly use mana for healing.  Quick levelling is all about kill speed and downtime, Enhancement Shammies are perfect for that.

Stoneclaw is a must for multi mobs or escaping, but yeah, it can first appear pretty useless Smiley

Enhancement is more like being a rogue or fury warrior.  You run up, get behind them whilst the tank keeps them busy and open up with both weapons as hard as possilbe.  You use totems to buff yourself and the group you're in whilst relying on shock spells for interrupts and a nice bonus to damage.  You're not a million miles away in your views and Enhancement sounds like a good match to your expectations.

I played Enhancement right up to 70 and started raiding, but having already got 2 70's and another on the way, my wife now has the Shaman and he's currently gearing up as Elemental as it suits her play style more.

Thanks again for the help. . . . . i re-specced my shaman yesterday taking advice from what you said and the talent tree you gave me. . . . and im finding it much better, suits my style of play more and i dont have to worry about getting embroiled in cc as much anymore. . . . . .

The shamanistic focus is pretty sweet, with the thunderring hammer thing i deal out alot more critical strikes and then i get a cheap shock spell too. . . . killing things much more quickly.

Level 22 now. . . . . . levelling up quite quickly cos im doing higher level quests with my mate who is a lvl 30 dwarf paladin.  Done the wanted ones in westfall and am now off to get my water totem from azruemyst.

Thanks again. . . . . . . . . . .

So far the imitial comments from daal have stood me in good stead. The thing is an absolute mosnter to lvl with an with my new draginscale armour my downtime is next to nothing...i can wade through mobs piece of cake and not have to really rest in between.

The thing is i am looking at re-speccing due to the skills of other poeple i play with. This is mainly 2 paladins. One is lvl 61 and a pretty good DPS'er while the other is....well not really anythin at the moemnt but he is not likely to wanna go healin (and if he did he would be rubbish at it!!!!!!).

What i am thinkin is i could respec to elemntal with a bit of healin too in order to aid my group. I have excellent mana regen properties now so am cinsidereing a role whereby i stay back...placer totems to buff. Cast lots of ranged DPS and then step in to heal when required. i feel this will suit my my group alot better and i also like the llok fo some of the skills in the elemntal tree.

My question is:

Is it a bit early to be re-speccing to elemental, i can see that my current build is def best for levelling so should i wait til bout lvl 60 or 70 before i respec?

Any advice for the elemntal shammy...thnx
