I know that many of you probably already know this but as I work in the IT industry I have this .txt doc that I send to all my (wtf is a PC) friends/grandparents!

I hope that you find it usefull!

I have reworded it a bit as I guess that many of you already know how to use Download.com and install a program.

OK Free programmes I use!

(All of these can be downloaded from http://www.download.com)

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5.516 -
http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10788045.html?tag=pop.software

Ad-Aware 2007 7.0.2.5 -
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2007/3000-8022_4-10766151.html?tag=pop.software

Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.5 -
http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10743107.html?tag=pop.software

CCleaner 2.03.532 -
http://www.download.com/CCleaner/3000-2144_4-10780785.html?tag=lst-1

First off I know that AVG is not the best Anti Virus software in the world but for a free Anti Virus it is quick and the resources that it takes up is minimal compared to Norton (I have thrown that out of my use box as it is a pile of crap these days, PC boot up time longer and scans take forever /rant.........)
I will be in time looking at other Anti Virus Prog's and will update after my testing is complete!

OK once you have downloaded these Progs and installed! (With a Restart!)

Run the AVG full scan and Ad aware!! Go have some tea! These can take some time if you have not completed any scans for a while! It can also depend on your computer specs. Once these have finished run Ad aware again!  You can find on systems that have not had any scan run more than one scan will be needed to get rid of all the crap!

Then run the Spybot and CCleaner! (Adaware will remove more "Ad aware" than Spybot will but I have a strong feeling that more than one should be used this will catch of the Ad aware and help keep it cleaner!)

I do not run any of the other scans in Spybot apart from the standard one! But with CCleaner it is good to run all the scans and also the registry cleaner! This will pick out all the unwanted program entries and maybe make your boot up quicker.

Then Restart your PC! Can you smell that clean and fresh aroma?Huh

And always do your Windows Updates! and always run them in Custom mode! This way it will stop the Microsoft Hardware updates that 9/10 people's PC's Screw up with!
Note: -

If you find that you cannot remove any of the viruses or Ad aware on the PC, Then try booting up in safe mode and running again! This will help the software to run its scans as allot of the other progs that your running will not load in safe mode
(You can get to Safe mode, my spamming F8 when the PC is booting! You want to catch it after the POST screen; this is all the white text on a black background you see when your PC starts!

No Problem,

You hear all these scary stories and I have seen a couple of them First hand in my time!

The stupid thing is, is that if you do this once a month it can save your Bacon! and your online bank details too!

You did, but I thought I'd see if anyone agreed before I jumped to conclusions. But it seems you trust my judgement in the matter!

Excellent advice, I use all of the above as I have a m8 who owns a small IT company, as some of you know i was a victim myself and lost my account for two months. I never found anything conclusive which makes me very wary of add ons.  my techy friend reckons something was either on my machine proir to a reinstall which was done 2 months before hack or the add ons had a virus implanted which wouldnt be picked up with either firewall or scanner as it used the wow.exe to send info...

anyway regular change of p/w and scan till my machine sais no is my routine now Smiley
